The Windmill Way

This 26 mile route is utilised by the 1st Skidby Scouts as a challenge event called ‘The Windmill Way”, however is a rewarding walk at any time, taking in six wonderful East Riding of Yorkshire villages, the rolling hills and dales of the Yorkshire Wolds and the magnificent Skidby Windmill.

Skidby Mill
Much of the walk follows other well established walks detailed on the area’s OS map (OS Explorer 293) i.e. The High Hunsley Circuit, The Beverley Twenty and The Yorkshire Wolds Way, to name a few, all following well established way marked public footpaths and bridal ways, therefore not a difficult route to navigate if familiar with the area.
If walking as an anytime challenge, the walk can be started from any village along the route, however plenty of road side parking is available in Welton, South Cave and Skidby therefore advisable to commence from one of these locations.
Please note that the ’Windmill Way’ challenge walk makes use of permissive paths and therefore not usually open at any other time, therefore please ensure that if this is being undertaken as an anytime challenge ensure that my route is followed.

For information regarding the annual challenge walk, please see the LDWA web site .

A Risby Ramble

Although this flat six and a half mile walk can be started from a couple of locations along the route, I have chosen to set off from the charming East Yorkshire village of Walkington.

The route utilises a number of well established public footpaths and longer distance walking routes (in particular the Beverley 20 and the High Hunsley Circuit) taking in the beautiful village of Skidby.

By following an alternative path, marked on the map above in black, the walk also passes Skidby Mill (the additional route adds a further two and a half miles to the walk).

This figure of eight walk starts at the Walkington children’s play park where parking is available (detailed on the route map) and heads in an anti clockwise direction at GR TA60168 36855.

All Hallows Church, Walkington
The route heads west, first passing the All Hallows Church to GR SE99529 36731, taking the minor road south to Halfpenny Gate Cottage onto Risby Park Farm, passing the site of an old medieval village of Risby until meeting the Dunflat Road at GR TA00316 34674.

Looking back to Walkington from Dunflat Road
From Dunflat Road the route heads south towards Skidby following the High Hunsley Circuit, detailed on the OS map, at GR TA00681 34786 - upon reaching Skidby the walk can head back to Walkington using a footpath that skirts the north of the village and rejoins the alternative route at Church Rise (X).

Muddy path heading towards Skidby Mill
The alternative route is picked up by heading south into the village heading towards the cemetery at GR TA00966 33216. By following this footpath, ensuring to take the turn over Gallows Hill at GR TA01226 32941 the route passes the local landmark of Skidby Mill.

Skidby Mill
Leaving Skidby Mill the route follows Beverley Road back into Skidby, passing Skidby Hill Farm and turning left into the village (Main Street). Upon reaching St Michael's Parish Church the route turns right into Church Rise passing the Methodist Church, where it picks up the shorter route (X, meeting the alternative Beverley 20 route back to Dunflat Road.

St Michael's Parish Church  and ahead Chuch Rise to the right
Crossing Dunflat Road and walking through Fishpond Wood the route briefly meets the main road back into Walkington, although the route takes the next available footpath at GR TA01264 35836 onto Silver Fir Plantation and returning to the High Hunsley Circuit at Risby Park Farm.

Walkington Plantation
Following the footpath back to Walkington the route branches right at Halfpenny Gate Cottages to cross Walkington Plantation emerging close to All Hallows Church. By turning right the path leads back to the playing field and the car park.

Route

I've put this route together using well established paths including The Hudson Way, High Hunsley Walk, Wilberforce Way, Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Beverley Twenty. The walk is not difficult and should be achievable by anyone with experience of walking twenty miles.

The stretch between Beverley and Market Weighton is relatively flat with the return route to Beverley also not being too difficult. The route is simple to follow using a standard OS map, with many option for refreshments along the way, whilst passing through some of the area's villages and larger towns (Beverley, Market Weighton and Bishop Burton).

The walk starts off at a public car park on the outskirts of Molescroft, Beverley and heads along the Hudson Way route (The Hudson Way is a fantastic path for cyclists).

* The Hudson Way from Beverley to Market Weighton
Upon reaching a road junction that can be taken to Goodmanham (well worth a visit) at Ref: SE900426 the Hudson Way carries onto Market Weighton, however by taking the road out of Goodmanham and follow the Yorkshire Wold Way path South East will start the return route back to Beverley.

*Kiplingcoates Railway station (http://www.wicstun.com)
By following the footpath to Newbald Lodge (now joining the High Hunsley Curcuit) and heading to Bishop Burton the route continues to Walkington and then following the Beverley Twenty route onto the Beverley Westwood to Molescroft. There are a few routes back to the starting location, however it's worth following the main town streets as detailed in the route map for the most clear direct route.

* Beverley Minster

Beverley Twenty Back Nine!

Depending upon the variations of the route this is a seven to nine mile circular walk, taking in the historic market town of Beverley, Walkington, Bentley and the Beverley Westwood. The walk can be started from various locations along the route, although I have described the walk from the Beverley Minster, however just as easy to start from either Walkington or the Beverley Westwood.

*Beverley Minster
The first time I walked the majority of this route was when I completed the Beverley Twenty Hike - a route from the Humber Bridge to the Beverley Minster (part 1 of the LDWA 4 walks Heritage Way) - To see more regarding these walks select the following link 'LDWA Anytime Walks'

This walk is a combination of The Beverley Twenty's two alternative routes to the finish (the Beverley Minister) splitting at Skidby, the first passing through Bentley, the other by following the more traditional route via Walkington.

From The Beverley Minster the walk heads in a southerly direction following 'Long Lane' until reaching a public footpath before a right hand bend leading to Willow Lane. Follow the footpath to GR TA039 387 where a choice of paths can be chosen by either:
  1. Crossing the railway lines and following the footpath to recross the lines at GR TA043 387 rejoining Long Lane at GR TA041 376
  2. Follow the railway lines to rejoin Long Lane at GR TA039 380 passing Black House Farm
Either way, both routes meet up on Long Lane, and should be followed until meeting up with the Beverley Twenty route at GR TA043 369 by turning right at the junction just before the Beverley Park rail crossing. The walk at this point follows the Beverley Twenty route over the A1079 (via a footbridge) towards Bentley.

Passing through Bentley, pick up the footpath at GR TA043 369 passing Sod Wall Plantation and Silver Fir Plantation meeting up with the other alternative Beverley Twenty route at Risby Park Farm that heads towards Walkington.

At GR SE998 358 take the public footpath via Walkington Plantation skirting the southern edge of the village (although Walkington is a fantastic place to visit and take lunch -  there are a couple of brilliant public houses), meeting up with the Killingwoldgraves Lane where the route heads towards Bentley Park and Moore Lane Track at GR TA009 365, which reaches it's end at Walkington Road opposite Broadgate  Farm.

Turning right over the bridge, that crosses the A1079, turn immediately left at the footpath running parallel to the A1079 until GR TA009 382 - this path leads onto the Beverley Westwood. Upon reaching the common head towards 'Black Mill', Beverley Minster should be visible, crossing the golf course (please note that walkers have the right of way and therefore no fixed footpath needs to be followed).

View of Black Mill upon reaching the Beverley Westwood
From 'Black Mill' head South East to hit the Walkington Road again, however on the same bearing, carry on a further four hundred yards to reach Keldgate Road.

On following this road it will lead directly back to the Beverley Minster and the end of the walk.
